Commissioning, from first test to documented handover

I commission new installations and revamps on vessels, rigs and industrial sites, for yards, owners and operators. Electrical, mechanical and hydraulic, ATEX areas included. Afterwards I keep them running.

What I do

From wired cabinets to a working installation

Commissioning is where a drawing becomes a working installation. I take a new build or a revamp from the point where the cabinets are wired and the pipes are connected to the point where the equipment does what the specification says, under load, with the alarms proven and the handover done. I do the electrical, the mechanical and the hydraulic side myself, because on a davit or a generator set the three cannot be tested apart.

Every test goes on paper. I work from a documented test protocol, record the readings and the settings, and hand over a file that shows what was tested, how and with what result. For equipment in ATEX zones the commissioning follows the requirements that apply there. The fault-finding in between, when a loop does not close or a pressure will not build, is the part that comes with years of doing this.

Servicing is the same work after the handover: overhauls of equipment that has been at sea for years, replacements of generators and drives, and inspections that tell you what is about to fail before it does.

  • Electrical, mechanical and hydraulic commissioning of new installations and revamps
  • ATEX commissioning of equipment in hazardous areas
  • Documented test protocols: readings, settings and results on paper
  • Structured handovers to crew, yard or operator
  • Overhauls: resealing cylinders, replacing hoses, cleaning hydraulic tanks, refurbishing valves and control systems
  • Generator replacements: alignment with preload, epoxy chocking, insulation resistance testing, AVR setup
  • Inspections with a power analyser and a thermal camera, so a worn capacitor or a loose connection shows up before it stops you

When to call

Three situations where I get the call

  1. A commissioning window is coming up

The new build or the revamp is nearly built, the date is fixed and the equipment still has to be tested, set up and signed off. I come in before that window, run the tests, document them and hand over. Electrical, mechanical and hydraulic in one pair of hands, so the schedule does not hang on three parties.

  2. Equipment that has been at sea for years

After ten years of service any installation needs an overhaul: seals, hoses, tanks, valves and the control system around them. A davit is your last resort offshore, so the overhaul has to be done right. I do it, including the dirty part, and test it before I leave.

  3. You want to know what is about to fail

Maintenance is more than changing a filter. A distorted sine wave can point to worn capacitors, a loose connection shows up on a thermal camera. I inspect the installation, tell you what I found and what it means, and you plan the repair instead of waiting for the breakdown.

In the field

Commissioning and service work, without the names

Client and vessel names stay confidential. What I can show is what the installation was, what was wrong or needed, and what I did about it.

I answer personally and can be on site at short notice.

Have this at hand when you call

  • Make and model of the equipment: winch, davit, generator set, drive
  • Where the vessel or rig is now, and where it will be
  • What happened, and when it has to run again
  • Who I can reach on site

Talk to me about your commissioning or service job

Tell me what the equipment is and when the window or the next campaign starts. I respond personally, usually within one working day.
