Diagnosis, repair and commissioning across drive, control and power

These six areas are my daily work. Each has its own page. Pick the one closest to your problem, or call me if nobody can say where the fault lives.

Six areas of work

What I work on

Each area has its own page with the systems, the brands and the kind of jobs I take on. The short version is below.

  • 01

    PLC programming & automation

Siemens Step7 and TIA Portal, Allen Bradley, WAGO and Praxis. I troubleshoot legacy logic, rewrite code blocks in STL, LAD or FBD and commission new PLC platforms. Many service calls start as a mechanical problem and end in the control code.

  • 02

Frequency drives, power electronics & SCR systems

VFD configuration, fault diagnosis and field repairs on Siemens, ABB, Unico and IDM. Ross Hill and NOV SCR systems on drilling rigs. Most suppliers will not touch a high-power unit on site. I repair it where it stands.

  • 03

    Commissioning & servicing

Electrical, mechanical and hydraulic commissioning of new installations and revamps. ATEX commissioning, structured handovers and documented test protocols, and the fault-finding that only comes with experience.

  • 04

    EMS & PMS integration

Propulsion, energy management and process control, integrated over Modbus, Profibus, NMEA 0183, NMEA 2000, J1939 and Ethernet. So the bridge sees what the engine room is doing, and the load management does what it promises.

VFD houses & top drive systems

Top drives from Tesco, Varco, ABB and Canrig, and the VFD houses that feed them. Rig moves, re-commissioning, panel rewires after fires and hard-failure diagnosis, offshore and on land.

    Battery-powered & hybrid vessels

Charging systems, energy management and propulsion control on battery-electric and hybrid vessels: passenger ferries, water buses and crew transfer platforms. A fast-moving field where conservative engineering still wins.

Where the fault lives

Between disciplines

When a fault sits between disciplines, or nobody can say where it lives, that is usually where I am needed most. Drive, control and power meet on every complex installation, and that boundary is where the real problems hide.

A drive that trips, a PLC that shows an alarm, generators that do not share load: each supplier looks at their own box. I look at the whole chain, from the switchboard to the code.

System down?

Call. The phone is faster than the form.

I answer personally and can be on site at short notice.

Have this at hand when you call

  • Make and model of the system: drive, PLC, top drive, PMS
  • Where the vessel or rig is now, and where it will be
  • What happened, and when it has to run again
  • Who I can reach on site

Talk to me about your project

A system down, a commissioning window coming up, or a specialist on call for the longer term. I respond personally, usually within one working day. Earlier jobs, with client names left out, are on the In the field.
