Power and energy management that does what it promises

I connect propulsion, generators, energy management and process control into one system, for owners, operators, yards and integrators. The bridge sees what the engine room does, and load shedding works when it has to.

What I do

Only as good as the data they get

A power management system and an energy management system are only as good as the data they get. Generators, switchboards, drives, propulsion controls and bridge equipment usually come from different suppliers, each with its own protocol and its own idea of what a signal means. My job is to make them talk to each other, and to check that what arrives on the bridge is what is really happening in the engine room.

The second half of the work is making the system do what the specification says. Synchronisation, frequency and voltage control, load shedding when the demand gets too high: it all looks fine on paper and often behaves differently once the real consumers are switched on. I test it with the installation running, and I adjust the logic and the settings until the behaviour matches the specification.

  • Integrating propulsion, generators and switchboards into the PMS, with synchronisation and load shedding that hold up under real loads
  • Coupling energy management and process control to drives and PLCs over the fieldbus and Ethernet
  • Bringing navigation and engine data to the bridge over NMEA, and distributing it to every system that needs it
  • Testing and tuning load shedding, frequency control and voltage control with the real consumers switched on
  • Finding the fault when the data on the bridge and the state of the engine room do not agree

When to call

Three situations where I get the call

  1. The bridge does not see what the engine room is doing

Readings that are missing, late or plainly wrong. Alarms that come from a system nobody can trace. The suppliers each say their side works. I follow the signal from the sensor to the screen, find where it goes wrong and fix it there.

  2. The load management does not do what it promises

Generators that will not synchronise cleanly, reactive power that runs away, load shedding that trips the wrong consumers or does not trip at all. I test the PMS with the real loads, correct the logic and the settings, and leave it in a state you can trust during critical operations.

  3. New equipment has to join an existing network

A new drive, generator, controller or piece of bridge equipment that has to exchange data with what is already installed. I map the protocols, make the connection, and check that the rest of the installation keeps behaving as before.

In the field

Integration work, without the names

Client and vessel names stay confidential. What I can show is what the installation was, what was wrong or needed, and what I did about it.

+31 6 838 507 23

I answer personally and can be on site at short notice.

Have this at hand when you call

  • Make and model of the PMS or EMS, and of the switchboard
  • Which protocols are in play between the systems
  • Where the vessel or platform is now, and where it will be
  • Who I can reach on site

Talk to me about your PMS or EMS

Tell me which systems have to work together and what goes wrong between them. I respond personally, usually within one working day.
