Charging, EMS and propulsion control on battery and hybrid vessels
I get battery and hybrid vessels to charge, sail and switch sources as designed. For owners and operators of passenger ferries, water buses and crew transfer platforms, and the yards and integrators that build them.
What I do
The fault often sits between charger, energy management and drive
A battery vessel is three systems that have to agree with each other: the charger that fills the battery, the energy management that decides where the power goes, and the propulsion drives that use it. On a hybrid there is a generator in the mix as well. Each part usually comes from a different supplier, and the fault lives in the handover between them more often than in any single box. That is where I work.
The bigger the battery, the more control there is around it, and the more places a fault can hide. I optimise the charging strategy, tune the energy management so the load sharing does what the specification promised, and set up propulsion control so the vessel responds the way the captain expects. On a new build I commission these systems together with the rest. On a vessel in service I find the fault, fix it and leave the settings documented.
- Optimising charging systems: charge rates, limits and the handshake between charger and battery management
- Tuning energy management on fully battery-powered and hybrid vessels: load sharing, source switching, generator start and stop
- Setting up and troubleshooting propulsion control on battery-electric and hybrid drives
- Tracing faults through the control systems around the battery: insulation monitoring, switch modules, alarms that trip for no clear reason
- Linking battery and energy management to the bridge, so the bridge sees the real state of charge

Protocols and integration: EMS & PMS integration
When to call
Three situations where I get the call
-
The vessel does not charge the way it should
Charging takes longer than planned, stops early or trips on a fault that resets itself. The charger supplier blames the battery, the battery supplier blames the charger. I look at the whole chain, from shore connection to cell, and find where the fault actually sits.
-
The energy management does not do what it promises
On a hybrid the generator starts when it should not, the battery is never used to its full range, or the load sharing hunts between sources. I tune the energy management to the operating profile of the vessel.
-
A new battery or hybrid vessel to commission
Charging, energy management and propulsion come from different parties and have to work together from the first sailing. I commission them as one system and leave documented settings behind, so the crew and the next engineer know what was set and why.
In the field
Battery system work, without the names
Client and vessel names stay confidential. The photos show where the work happens: insulation monitoring, switch modules and the battery room itself.

Battery system troubleshooting
Battery systems keep getting bigger, and so do the control systems behind them: complex, and sensitive to faults. The devil is in the details.

Call. The phone is faster than the form.
+31 6 838 507 23I answer personally and can be on site at short notice.
Have this at hand when you call
- Make and model of the battery system, charger and drives
- Where the vessel is now, and when it has to sail again
- What the alarm says, and whether it resets itself
- Who I can reach on board
Talk to me about your battery or hybrid vessel
Tell me what the system does wrong and when the vessel has to sail again. I respond personally, usually within one working day.
